Helldivers 2 continues to be one of those rare games that manages to stay at the center of controversy since its release. The PlayStation account requirement crisis experienced in its early days was perhaps the most organized backlash a game has ever seen. However, peace has never been fully restored since then. In the last few months, the situation has noticeably worsened, and the game has once again dropped to the “Mostly Negative” status on Steam.

Why Did the Problems Escalate?

Over the past few months, several issues have piled up, exhausting the patience of the players. The long-awaited Cyberstan update arrived with only one new mission and three enemy types, ending almost immediately. The vast majority of new content was introduced exclusively in paid Warbond packages. Secret nerfs were applied to the weapons and stratagems frequently used by players without any mention in the patch notes. The rise of toxic players and the developers’ inadequate responses to feedback only added fuel to the fire.

An organized backlash began around these issues on Reddit. The former CEO of the game’s developer Arrowhead, Johan Pilestedt, hosted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) event on the HelldiversUnfiltered subreddit. However, the outcome was far from meeting expectations. Pilestedt revealed that the game doesn’t have a dedicated balancing team and gave evasive answers to many questions. This led to an even greater backlash.

New Official Statement from Arrowhead

Today, Arrowhead published a comprehensive statement across Reddit, Discord, and X. Here are the highlighted topics from the statement:

The Galactic War and progression system are being revamped. Arrowhead stated that they have expanded the team working in this area. Plans include evolving Major Orders into multi-week themed “Campaigns”, branching scenarios, and more meaningful rewards. The first results will start appearing this summer.

No clear answer regarding the hidden changes. Arrowhead acknowledged that their patch notes need to be more comprehensive. However, they did not explain the reasoning behind the secret changes made to enemy stats. This part of the statement became the most criticized point within the community. They ask the question in the header but don’t provide a real answer in the paragraph.

Open beta tests are coming. There are plans to test balance changes with a broader audience before they go live. However, due to the risk of spoiling story content tied to the Galactic War, they noted that they will be careful regarding its boundaries.

The controversy over Exosuits in Warbonds. Arrowhead stated that the exosuit decision in the Exo Experts Warbond was a thematic choice. However, they confirmed they understand players’ expectations and that vehicles unlockable through gameplay progression will be coming in the future.

It was also announced that new red stratagems, ship modules, and level 150+ content are actively being worked on.

The Community is Not Convinced

Reactions to the statement are largely negative. The point players highlight the most is that Arrowhead has made the promise to “be more transparent” multiple times before. However, they feel they haven’t seen much evidence of this in practice.

Some of the most prominent comments on Reddit summarize the situation well:

“I like how they mention that they hide enemy changes and then just did not elaborate on why they do that. Literally in the section header and there’s no actual answer in the paragraph lol.”

“It’s frustrating that the only way to get these kind responses is to review bomb and spend months complaining online, only for it to go nowhere. Start doing, not talking.”

“It shouldn’t take review bombs for the respect of listening to your players, thank you for further communication and hopefully looking forward to meaningful changes.”

It is hard to say that the statements promise concrete changes in their current form. We will have to wait for the summer to see how many of the promises Arrowhead will actually keep.
